Former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Arbitration and Mediation Act 2023 into law as one of his last official acts in office. The new Arbitration and Mediation Act 2023 which repealed the Arbitration and Conciliation Act of 1988.

Former attorney-general of the federation, Chief Bayo Ojo SAN is touted to have kicked off the process of amending the now repealed Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1988. A lot of notable lawyers and alternative dispute resolution practitioners are also noted to have contributed significantly to the process of advocating for the new law.

Reacting to the development, chairperson of the Arbitration and Conciliation Reform Committee, Mrs Funmi Roberts praised a number of practitioners including Prof. Paul Idornigie, SAN, Mr Isaiah Bozimo, the current President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Mr Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, and the Solicitor General of the Federation, Mrs Beatrice Jedy-Agba for their efforts.

Mrs Roberts also noted that Chief Gbola Akinola, SAN, Tunde Fagbohunlu, SAN, Supo Shasore, SAN, Abayomi Okubote, Modibbo Belgore, Wale Olawoyin, SAN and Yinka Kolade were all deserving of “special recognition.”
